At the moment this map doesn’t have many countries highlighted. I endeavour to change that as soon as I can!
Some countries I shall be revisiting, particularly in South East Asia, but most are entirely new. I started first off in brand new country, Iceland. You can read more about my experiences in my blog: www.mrlukeniktravels.com/blog
Whilst I deliberately have not set a particular itinerary of countries, with the exception of not visiting Africa and South America -for now, I do have a few guiding principals. Firstly in terms of budget. I have attempted to create a balance between more expensive countries, such as Iceland, and more economical ones, like those in Asia. In this way the costs should equal out over time.
Secondly, I have chosen a general direction of travel as westwards. This is not set in stone as I am purchasing point-to-point flights rather than a round-the-world ticket as this works better for me. This approach helps decision making and, for me, helps prevent choice overload which can become overwhelming! As a smaller point, travelling westwards is helpful for countering jet-lag, although I will eventually have to cross the international date line.
A third factor is my lack of enjoyment of long flights. I am not afraid of flying or air travel, just it is a means to get somewhere else. It is not something I particularly enjoy! Therefore, I try to keep flights to a rough maximum of 6-7 hours. (London to Auckland anyone?- no thanks!). This means splitting up large oceans with stops along the way, like Iceland. These are also often destinations that others fly over to reach a particular destination, crossing the Pacific ocean for example.
A further point of consideration is that there are other options to flying. Whilst I perhaps wouldn’t suggest hitch-hiking on a cargo ship across oceans, land-based transport can be cheaper and better for the environment too. The environment is perhaps a lesser considered aspect of being a travelling nomad, but still an important one. In the UK at the moment there is an on going debate over building a third runway at Heathrow. It is easy to forget, in the excitement of going places, of the impact of the air industry on the environment, fauna and people who are directly impacted by it.
Planning, booking and organising on the road is part of the course in this lifestyle. Sometimes it is a little more mundane than it might appear to those who haven’t been there! I talk a bit a more about this topic in my blog.
So after the methodology, hope you enjoy the details of my travels on this site!
